How to connect Outlook to IMAP & Caldav servers using OpenChange

Added by OS Use almost 4 years ago

I am in a corporate environment and we started using open source IMAP & Caldav servers for Email and Calendaring needs. The end users are used to using Outlook. Outlook has IMAP support so no problem for email part. The problem is with Calendaring.

Can I setup OpenChange to act as a proxy between Outlook and my Caldav server? Has any one done it earlier?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,

Actually you can't use OpenChange in proxy mode to serve Caldav content to Outlook, mostly because this plugin has never been developed.

However OpenChange as a server with SoGo backend can be used to access your remote CalDAV server and serve its content through MAPI. We are currently working with the Sogo team (Inverse Inc.) on a proof of concept where visible results and usable code are expected within few weeks.

Kind Regards,
Julien.

Thanks for the prompt reply Julien.
Good to know that it can work with Sogo.

Have a couple of questions. Dont mind me stretching this too far.

- When you say 'Sogo backend' you mean that OpenChange directly reads data from data store of Sogo and exposes it to Outlook? Or does it ask data from Sogo via CalDav and server it Outlook.
- Will it work with Outlook 2007 and 2010 aswell?

Sogo's website already seems to suggest that this feature is available. Please let me know there is some thing already available. We can thoroughly test it out and send feed back/bugs.

It directly reads data from data store of Sogo and exposes it to Outlook. Additionally same data can be accessed in real-time through CalDAV client. (CalDav -> sogo libs -> sogo db)

OpenChange does provide support for Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010. So yes it should be working. Outlook 2010 has some specific requirements (mostly with view) and we still fail to display/server them properly sometimes. Our main target for this POC is Outlook 2003.

Actually the POC is already available (using openchange trunk and sogo trunk), however it misses some features that we'd like to see implemented to have efficient feedbacks and move to the next implementation stage. We have scheduled to implement them within next weeks. In the meanwhile, I will probably update the wiki this week and add a sogo-openchange installation guide + maybe update our Virtual Appliance with a ready-to-work openchange server + sogo installation.
